Bernard Berg was a candidate for being Swedish among 1904 Olympians. In that case, Sweden would join France, Great Britain and Italy in having had nationals at every Olympic Games (summer and winter - Australia and Greece missed a few winter games, and Switzerland boycotted Melbourne). It seems more likely he is Danish, though.

In his book, Mallon calls this fencer A. Berger, but he's since identified him with Herman-Georges Berger, without explaining why he was allowed to fence twice in the same event. I decided to continue to count the unknown fencer in pool 1, and list him as A. Berger because that is the only information available.

(*) team rosters not certainly known
Axel Berggren was probably the best candidate for being Swedish among 1904 Olympians. If he had been, Sweden would join France, Great Britain and Italy in having had nationals at every Olympic Games (summer and winter - Australia and Greece missed a few winter games, and Switzerland boycotted Melbourne).
Genealogical evidence tells us that Axel emigrated with his parents to Chicago in 1887, and that his father obtained US citizenship by 1892. Axel was only 11 at that time, so he presumably also became a US citizen. Too bad for Sweden's Olympic stature.
Seth Collins, also on the Chicago team, was also born in Sweden.
