Emil Jand

Olympic Competitor nr 6856

Competed for R.-V. Germania of Leitmeritz. Leitmeritz, now Litomerice, is located in the Northwest of the (current) Czech Republic. The area, also known as Sudetenland, was heavily Germanized (and the Rüderverein Germania corresponds to this), but was included in Czechoslovakia after 1920. The German speaking population was expelled after 1945. For these reasons, I class the 5 rowers of this team as Germans.

Born in Vojvodina, part of Serbia, but close to the Croatian border. His son and daughter, both Olympians, were born in the same town. The son is married to a Slovenian and represented Croatia, his daughter married a Bulgarian and represented Hungary. A third son, non-Olympian, also represented Croatia.
He died in Beograd, but considering that that was in a car accident, it does not inform us of where he actually resided after the break-up of Yugoslavia. I shall go with his two sons and call him Croatian.
Almost unique among canoeists, he competed both in kayak and canadian. He was entered in C2 in Moskva, but did not start.

He was born in Montenegro, played for Split in Croatia, and died in Slovenia. A Croatian book calls him Croatian, and a Slovenian book calls him Slovenian. I see no reason not to do as I always do: going with the birthplace; so I call him Montenegrin.
