One of only two swimmers to have won an Olympic title in the same event in three Games.
Although she had the advantage of a lean, boylike figure, not everything in Miss Fraser's physical make-up was in her favour when, aged fourteen, she first came to the attention of her coach Harry Gallagher. Throughout her swimming life she suffered from bronchial asthma.
Miss' Fraser's name appears on the world record list thirty-nine times. She beat a twenty-year-old world record when she returned 1:04.5 sec for the 100 metres freestyle in February 1956. Her progress after that was remarkable and eight years later she brought the time down to 58.9 sec, which stood for eight years. She was an all-rounder of considerable ability and won Australian titles in butterfly and individual medley.
In all three of her Olympics she reached the final in the 400 metres freestyle, her best placing being second in 1956 (fourth in '64, fifth in '60). She also won one relay gold and three silvers.
