He tied with Jack Davis in the US trials before the Melbourne Olympics and a foto-finish had to split them at Melbourne.
In 1958 he was suspended by the Amateur Athletic Union because his wife had received 1000$ on a TV-game show. After missing a season he equalled the world record at 13.2 sec in 1960, before winning the Olympic title for a second time, again on a foto-finish.
Inducted in 1974 in the USATF Hall of Fame.
