Armenians are very hard to class. They suffered a genocide and are found in a world- wide diaspora. Only few Ottoman Armenians settled in then Russian-held Armenia, so we shall have to let this athlete be classed as Turkish. He was from İstanbul after all.

The outstanding champion in Olympic boxing history. Papp said once that his hardest bout in the Olympics was in the 1948 final against Johnny Wright (GBR). But his peak may well have been his third victory in 1956 against José Torres (USA) who later became world professional light-heavyweight champion. Papp won the European professional middleweight title in 1962 , but he did not receive a passport and was not allowed to leave Hungary to go and fight for a Professional World Title. He was unbeaten when he finally retired.
He combined both technical skill and a powerful punch and succesfully coached the Hungarian teams.
The World Boxing Council made Papp an "Honourary World Champion" in 1989.
He actually moved down weights in his Olympic career, winning the Middleweight in 1948 (-73 kg), the Light Middleweight (-71 kg) in 1952 and '56.
