Two days before winning his first of three individual Biathlon golds at Salt Lake City, he competed against the specialist Cross-Country skiers at a distance higher than any of his normal events (and without resting pauses for shooting). He proved it was not just a training run by finishing sixth (later turned into fifth).
At age 40, he still competed at Sochi, and won his third gold in the 10 km Sprint.
He was elected to the IOC Athlete's Commission after the Sochi games.
