The most successful bobber in history. He won 11 world titles, 8 in two-man
(1957-61,63,66,68) and 3 in 4-man (60,61,68). At Igls (Innsbruck) in 1964,
he loaned his axle to Antony Nash, thus enabling him to continue after his
own axle had been broken. The British competitor went on to win the gold
medal in front of two Italian sleds.
Already the oldest medallist at Innsbrück, he was of course the oldest
gold medallist at Grenoble.
He would probably have won more medals but for the American reluctance for
buiding a bob-course at Squaw Valley.

for three years. He made a come-back after his mother had died.
Although he swam slower in Barcelona (53.32) than in Los Angeles (53.23 -
behind Michael Gross), he had a better medal,
eight years on ! World Champion at 100 m butterfly in 1986.

When he won the 1976 gold medal, he was still unsure of his career and thought
the running would distract him from his studies. 118 consecutive wins later,
in 1986, he said 'I never thought I would be in track and field this long'.
He is no doubt one of the surest non-triple gold medalists because of the
Moskva boycot.
He was chosen to pronounce the Olympic oath at Los Angeles, where he stumbled
over his words, if not his hurdles.
He earned a BS degree in physics and engineering, and used his expertise
in developping the dynamics of his hurdling. He took only 13 steps between
the hurdles.
He was world champion in 1983 and 1987.
