Already world famous in the ski jump, he also learned the alpine discipline of descent. Although he had the fastest downhill time, there was no medal for him, as only the combined alpine discipline was a medal event. His slalom was only good enough for a fourth place combined.
At St.Moritz in 1948, he was present as coach to the Norwegian jumping team. He was then added to the team itself and justified this selection by winning silver.
