A pioneer of Finnish Javelin throwing, he achieved a world record of 62.57 m in 1915 and eventually raised this to 66.10 m in 1919 before winning two Olympic titles. He had already finished eighth at Stockholm and threw an unofficial 67.96 m in 1925.
