Calculating Bridge Tournaments

General Principles - Cross-IMPs

The different 'MP'-methods have one thing in common : only the placing counts, not the actual result.

In Team of Four matches, the actual result is most often taken into account : usually, after comparison, the difference is converted into International Match Points.

Several ways have been suggested to apply the same principle to pairs tournaments. One way to achieve this is to compare each result with all others, and convert all differences into IMPs, according to the official WBF-scale. Usually the sum of all these IMPs is divided by the number of comparisons, thereby yielding a more manageable number.

I shall however show that it is better to divide by the number of scores, in stead of the number of comparisons.
