Melbourne 1956

There were 10 competitors, placed in four heats of two or three. That made four qualifiers to the quarterfinals and six who went to the repêchage. There should have been three winners and one further qualifier from a fourth heat with all the losers. However, Germany and the Soviet Union both failed to finish in their heat, so they had to go to the fourth heat, which now would have two qualifiers. The Soviets did not compete in that heat, the Germans finished third. Germany should therefore be placed ninth and the Soviet Union tenth.
