Region of Sudan

The territory of the country now known as Sudan was part of the larger country of Sudan that existed until 2011.
In January 1899, an agreement restored Egyptian rule to Sudan, but in the form of a condominium, with joint authority between Egypt and the United Kingdom.
On 1 January 1956 the country became an independent republic.
After a long struggle for independence, South Sudan gained independence in 2011.
The colony of Sudan never sent teams to the Olympics, but Sudan participated regularly since 1960.
Some athletes during that period came from the south of the country and are assigned South Sudanese nationality.
