The territory of the country now known as South Sudan was part of the larger
country of Sudan.
In January 1899, an agreement restored Egyptian rule to Sudan, but in the form
of a condominium, with joint authority between Egypt and the United Kingdom.
On 1 January 1956 the country became an independent republic.
After a long struggle for independence, South Sudan gained independence in 2011.
The colony of Sudan never sent teams to the Olympics, but
independent Sudan participated regularly since 1960.
There have been a number of athletes from South Sudan since then.
The NOC of South Sudan was formed only in 2015, and the country participated
in the 2016 Olympics, but two athletes from South Sudan were allowed to
participate (as Independent Olympic Participants) in London in 2012.
