The territory of the country now known as Ghana was British since 1874, when a
British Protectorate was declared over the Gold Coast. The colony was explanded
by adding the Ashanti kingdom and Northern territories. In May 1956 the former
Mandate called Togoland was also joined to the colony.
On 6 March 1957 the colony became an independent dominion under the name Ghana. In
1960 this became a republic.
The Gold Coast sent a team to the 1952 Olympics. From 1960
there were teams called Ghana.
