Mallon's book on the 1912 Olympic Games
The data on these pages are completely according to the excellent book by
Bill Mallon and Ture Widlund:
"The 1912 Olympic Games - Results for All Competitors in All Events, with
Commentary", Jefferson NC, 2001
Included Sports and Events
There are no problems with the determination of which events in Stockholm
are Olympic and which are not.
Known errors in Mallon
-
I am very grateful to Bill Mallon for receiving an advance copy of this book,
and I spotted six (very small) errors in Mallon's counting. These were corrected
into the final edition of the book.
-
Hermann : Mallon lists and counts Eduard Hermann of
Estonia as competing in the 10 km walk. He arrives at 537 athletes instead
of 536.
-
Townsend : just after the publication, it came to
light that the painter Ernest Townsend was from Derby (Great Britain), and
not from Ireland, as written by Richard Stanton
Very Probable error in Mallon
-
Jack : Fritz Jack of Germany was scheduled to play in
many events, but he did not make it to the playing field once. Apparently
he came closest in the team sabre, when he should have been the fourth fencer
to face a Briton in a first round match. Just prior to this fourth bout however,
the Swedish team forfeited and since Britain and Germany were now both qualified
for the next round, their match was stopped and the fourth German never fenced.
I do agree with Bill Mallon that this makes this fourth fencer a competitor
in the Olympics, but I have grave doubts if the fourth German was actually
Fritz Jack. Every team was allowed eight members, four of which had to fence
in one match. The German team actually used eight different fencers in the
subsequent rounds and so it seems unlikely to me that the scheduled fencer
in round one was Fritz Jack. I decide not to count him and have one
German less than Bill Mallon as a consequence.
Unknown Competitors
-
there are no unknown competitors from the Stockholm Games.
Mallon counts 2380 competitors, but that includes Fritz Jack and Eduard Hermann.
I believe there were only 2378 Sport competitors in Stockholm.
However, I also count the artists as competitors, so I have an additional
34 (35 artists, with Walter Winans competing both in Shooting and Sculpture)
competitors, bringing the final tally to 2412.
