Mallon's book on the 1900 Olympic Games

The data on these pages are completely according to the excellent book by Bill Mallon :

"The 1900 Olympic Games - Results for All Competitors in All Events, with Commentary", Jefferson NC, 1998

Included Sports and Events

In determining the exact nature of the Olympic events, I have decided to follow Mallon to the letter.

Thus Archery and Sailing (Yachting) are retained, as are Croquet and Pelota Basque, which are usually ignored by historians.

Mallon uses four criteria to determine whether or not an event was "Olympic":

Errors in Mallon

This is the list of errors that have been reported and that Bill Mallon has agreed to. Errors 1-31 were published in his work on the 1920 Olympics. Errors 32 and further are corrected in the databases used sice then. (excluding errors in the non-Olympic events)

1 Dirk Boest Gips replaces Gerardus van Hoon/G. van Loon

2 Alexander Gleichman von Oven, Jr is missing in the list of German Rowers

3 Harry Lee is missing in the list of American Athletes

4 William Moloney is missing in the list of American Athletes

5 van der Stoppen is missing in the list of Austrian Fencers. This brings the number of Austrian Fencers to 9, and the total number of Austrians to 14.

6 Maurice Jay is missing in the list of French Fencers

7 Lucien Largé is missing in the list of French Fencers

8 André Rabel is missing in the list of French Fencers

9 Soudois is missing in the list of French Fencers

10 Wattelier is missing in the list of French Fencers

11 Gustav Adolph Moths is missing in the list of German Rowers

12 a second fencer named Dizier is missing in the list of French Fencers

13 a second fencer named Lézard is missing in the list of French Fencers

14 a French Fencer called Aufort is counted twice

15 Selderslagh is incorrectly listed and counted among the French Fencers - he is Belgian

16 seven missing French Fencers, and two counted double, brings the total of French Fencers to 216 in stead of 211 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15)

17 five extra French Fencers and one extra Austrian brings the total of Fencers to 264 in stead of 258 (5, 16)

18 The name is either Galee or Gelée (I'm guessing Gelée) but, but considering that they rowed with the same partner in two boats of Dieppe, it is more likely a spelling error. This is almost certainly only one Rower.

19 The unknown cox of Minerva is French, not Dutch. This brings the total of Dutch rowers to 13, not 14. It brings the total Dutch participation to 28, not 29.

20 Two errors cancel out one another, the total number of French Rowers is correct at 47 (18, 19)

21 Two missing German Rowers, and a doubly counted Frenchman, means that the number of Rowers is 108, not 107 (2, 11, 18)

22 This person's name is written as Louis Auguste-Dormeuil and Auguste Dormeuil, but it is more likely Louis-Auguste Dormeuil, and almost certainly just one person.

23 J. Howard Taylor and S.M. Mellor are listed both as French (wrong) and as Britons (right)

24 There are 3 too many French sailors listed, but Mallon has also miscounted. There should be 73 French Sailors (22, 23). This brings the total number of known sailors to 95 in stead of 97.

25 Chenot is listed as entered in round one, heat 4, transferred to heat 3. In the result of heat 3 is listed Jules Clévenot. These are one and the same person.

26 M. Cadet (the M probably stands for Monsieur) in the team swimming and Cadet in the Waterpolo are probably one and the same as Victor Cadet who competed in the 200 m freestyle.

27 Two doubly counted French Swimmers brings the total down to 47 (25, 26), and the total number of swimmers to 76.

28 Errors in Fencing (+5), Rowing (0), Swimming (-2) and Sailing (-2) (16, 20, 24, 27) means that the total number of French competitors is 744 in stead of 743.

29 2 missing German Rowers (2, 11) bring the total up to 21, and the total number of German competitors to 77. The wrongly listed shooter (32) brings it back down to 76.

30 2 missing American Athletes (3, 4) brings the total number of Americans up to 75, the total number of Athletes to 117.

31 Errors in Athletics (+2), Fencing (+6), Rowing (+1), Swimming (-2), Sailing (-2) and a doubler (-1) (30, 17, 21, 27, 24, 32) make for a total of 4 additional competitors, which brings the final tally to 1226.

32 Baron André de Schonen is listed as German under shooting, and he is not counted as a sport doubler with Fencing.

Subsequent corrections

On the website of the OlyMADMen, the following changes have appeared:

My lists are now the same as these ones, except that I add 9 coxes and a further 239 competitors (see below) to arrive at 1466 competitors

Unknown Competitors

Next we come to the "unknown competitors".

On the pages about the Athina 1896 Olympics, I have consistently counted the full number of competitors, known and unknown. For Paris 1900, I want to continue that practice, but this is more difficult, especially in Equestrianism and Sailing. Mallon does count the unknown coxes in Rowing. Since I want to count the true numbers, known and unknown, I must make guesstimates for the 2 sports aforementioned.

My handling of the unknown competitors is as follows

Adding 136 Archers, 16 Equestrians, 12 Fencers and 81 Sailors brings the total number of competitors to 1466.

Other Possible errors in Mallon

There are a number of other things that should be looked into, and that may require additional adaptations to these pages (and to Bill Mallon's book)
