His wife, Galina Kulakova, won 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals between '68 and '80 in the nordic skiing.

On the 500 m at Torino, she fell foul of the new false start rule. Her opponent had caused a first false start, so the second start would be the final one. Timmer was not standing completely still, so she was disqualified. She took revenge in the 1000 m, where she finished just 0.04 and 0.06 ahead of silver and bronze (Anni Friesinger) to regain the title she won at Nagano.
