One of three Irishmen who emigrated to the USA in search of Hammer glory (together with John Flanagan and 1920 gold medal winner Pat Ryan). He managed silver medals with a 16 year interval ! At 45, he was the oldest medal winner in any Athletics contest.
In Stockholm, the shortest of his six throws was 4 meters longer than the throw that won second place.
