An East German, and he would have counted as such in 1964. But in 1966, he was punished by the GDR Athletics Federation for wearing Puma shoes rather than Adidas ones. He even lost his job at the newspaper. In 1967 he had the opportunity to defect to the West, and he represented West Germany at the 1972 Olympics.
