An East German, and he would have counted as such in 1964. But in 1966, he was punished by the GDR Athletics Federation for wearing Puma shoes rather than Adidas ones. He even lost his job at the newspaper. In 1967 he had the opportunity to defect to the West, and he represented West Germany at the 1972 Olympics.

Richard Mayer

B. 1892-03-23, Litomerice, Czech Republic, represented Austria

Olympic Competitor nr 6861

Competed for R.-V. Germania of Leitmeritz. Leitmeritz, now Litomerice, is located in the Northwest of the (current) Czech Republic. The area, also known as Sudetenland, was heavily Germanized (and the Rüderverein Germania corresponds to this), but was included in Czechoslovakia after 1920. The German speaking population was expelled after 1945. For these reasons, I class the 5 rowers of this team as Germans.
