Not, as often said, the first person to do the double on 200 and 400 meters. Marie-Josée Perec did that slightly earlier, and Valerie Brisco-Hooks 12 years earlier. Johnson did become, in Sydney, the first man to take the 400 m title a second time.
His fifth gold medal was taken away in 2008. In 2004, the CAS ruled that Jerome Young, who had run in the heats and semi-final, ought not to have been used by the US because of doping in 1999, but the team was allowed to keep the gold medal they had won without him in the final. Then, in 2008, the team was disqualified after Antonio Pettigrew admitted to having taken drugs in 2000.
