All the members of the Romanian Handball team (with the exception of Peter Fecsi) were German speakers from the region of Hermannstadt (now Sibiu), Hungarian before 1918, Romanian afterwards. The German Romanians numbered over 300,000 before 1940, and barely 30,000 today. However, they were never actively expelled from Romania. About 100,000 of them fled before the Red Army in 1945. Some 30,000 were sent as forced labourers to Russia. And many left Romania after the fall of the Iron Curtain (as German-speakers, they were free to settle in Germany). But my criterium is that of the "nephew" who does nothing "extraordinary". It would have been perfectly ordinary, in any of these events, to remain in Romania. In fact only one of the players of the Handball team (Stefan Zoller) died in Romania, but I will continue to call these athletes Romanians.
