In his childhood his parents, both Italians moved from Austria to Bozen (Bolzano) in Italy. When he won his 1964 silver medal, the inhabitants of Bozen built an indoor diving tank for him. He went on to win the diving from the 10-meter highboard at Mexico City, München and Montreal He also won silver on the 3-meter plank in '68 and was fourth in '72.
In 1976, he won before Greg Louganis, who would otherwise (or without the boycott) have three tower golds ('84, '88)
