At the age of thirteen, Mike Burton, whose sporting activity up till then had involved cross-country running, was involved in a cycling accident with a truck. He severed tendons under his right knee and the ball joint of his hip was forced into his rib cage. Doctors said he would never be able to compete in sports again, but advised him to do a little swimming to strengthen his leg muscles.
