He had a bye in round one and won the first fight in round two. Then Indian fighter Sakti Mazumdar was due to fight Nguyen Van Chua of Vietnam. But the Vietnamese did not show up. Mazumdar had had a bye in round one as well, and the organizers did not want him to go to the quarterfinals without fighting, so they ordered a new draw for the second round. Asuncion was put into that new draw, and he lost in the same round as the one in which he had beaten his only opponent, Basil Thompson.
