The first lifter to total 600 kg on the three lifts, and 400 kg on the two
lifts. His total of 440 kg remained an Olympic record from 1976 to 1996.
He was also World and European Champion from 1970 onwards.
When he wasn't training, he was collecting crystal goblets and Armenian cognac,
reading Lenin and the translated works of Jack London, and listening to the
recordings of Tom Jones. His supreme confidence touched every part of his
life. Not only was Alexeev the world's greatest superheavyweight, he also
considered himself the finest gardener, cook, carpenter, singer and billiards
player in perhaps the entire U.S.S.R.
Strengthtech have a site on weightlifting with lots of

Goalkeeper for India and Port Commissioners (Calcutta). He was an outstanding goalkeeper. He did not concede a single goal at Amsterdam. He played only one match at Los Angeles (there were only three teams and two matches and both goalkeepers got a chance) and conceded one goal in a 11-1 win - it is reported the goal was scored while he was off the pitch signing autographs. He conceded only five goals at Berlin.
